BOASTING 5 TEAMS AT 3 DIFFERENT MICHIGAN RINKS!!!

HISTORY: The Yak hockey team concept came together on a snowy night, over a bottle of Jack Daniels, when Ron Pate and Mike Gall concluded that they weren't spending enough man-time together. So they decided to join a hockey league.

Their humble beginnings started at the Kensington Ice Arena in a co-ed league. Their fervor for hockey continued to grow, and at that point, they decided to get their own team together. Having worn out their welcome at Kensington, they decided to take their brand of hockey to the cleaner confines of the Ann Arbor Ice Cube. They started in the Never-Ever League sporting a handful of original and newer members. They quickly found team camaraderie on and off the ice.

As time passed and the team grew, a few players have come and gone, but the core group has been together since 2004. Eventually the team moved up to the D2 level, won two championships in 2009, and then moved up to D1 where they won three consecutive championships to start off 2010. The Yak Association continues to grow in popularity and now fields a Never-Ever Team (The Yak Farm), a D2 Team managed by Eric Jackle and John Zamora, a Yak Team at the Onyx in Rochester managed by Joe Gordon, a Platinum Yaks team at Chelsea mamaged by Lee Sirvaitis and Mike Sanderson and our D1 Team managed by Mike Gall.

As a team, we participate in events on and off the ice including regular "grudge" matches against rival teams, Pond Hockey Tournaments, drinking binges, and holiday gatherings. We can usually be found in the local watering holes after games attending to our aching bodies. In essence, the Yaks are a "drinking team with a hockey problem"! If you love old, ugly dudes playing bad hockey, please come out and support the Yaks.  Afterall...once you go Yak, you never go back!

MISSION STATEMENT: The goal of our team is to provide a safe and productive environment that enables aging wanabee athletes to learn and apply the principles of teamwork, discipline, dedication, sportsmanship and alcoholism. We facilitate the development of strength and character in every individual that participates. Participation in our team is open only to those seeking to quench the thirst of life.

We are sustained by the efforts of volunteers who display an extraordinary amount of commitment and hard work, ensuring that our team maintains its solid reputation in the community.  We also strive to provide a service to our community by providing a healthy outlet for vagrants who would otherwise be roaming the streets of Ann Arbor seeking handouts.
